Call for Artwork Proposals When the Time Comes (Kun aika on) Exhibition 8 August–30 September 2024

Taiteilijat O – Artists O organizes a themed group exhibition for its members at the Stoa gallery in Helsinki's Itäkeskus in November-December 2025.

Theme of the exhibition

When the Time Comes -exhibition presents art and objects related to death, burial and memorial services.

The exhibition aims to challenge our established and rapidly changing understandings of the visual culture of death with the development of secularization. This includes the recent changes in society, such as multiculturalism and the diversity of values ​​and outlooks on life. The theme of the exhibition is not tied to a specific religion or culture. Through art, a discussion channel can be opened for a new type of treatment of death and funerals, as well as remembering and honoring the deceased, whether it is about anonymity, religion(s) or, for example, believing in ghosts and angels.


Application procedure

All members of Artist O – Taiteilijat O can participate in the exhibition. A maximum of two works can be proposed for the exhibition. A work proposal can also be a sketch and a written description of the work concept to be implemented. The artists are independently responsible for the production of their own works, but you can also propose site-related and community-related works for the exhibition. The year of manufacture is not decisive. In the selection of works, emphasis is placed on suitability to the theme of the exhibition, topicality and interest.

The jury fee is 30 euros, which must be paid before the application is sent, and a receipt of the payment is required for the application.

The exhibition fee paid for the artsits is unconfirmed. This depends on the Stoa gallery and the grants available for the exhibition.

There is no full-time supervisor in the gallery, but there is camera surveillance in the space. The artists are responsible for insuring their own works during transport and exhibition.

The form must be filled out and sent in one go. In addition to a written description of the work, a maximum of 5 images/work can be attached to the application.

Logging in to the application form with a gmail address is required at the very beginning, because the images of the artworks are uploaded directly to the form. Once logged in, you can upload images directly to the application from your own Google drive or computer.

Application preparation

1. Prepare the mandatory artwork or sketch images (max. 5 pcs, max. 1 MB / image, resolution 72 dpi).

File formats pdf and jpg. NOTE! Do not send photo collages made from several photos.

– a picture showing the work in its entirety

– a picture in which the work is depicted, e.g. from the front, and its dimensions are outlined

– 1-3 detail photos according to your choice

– pdf receipt for the jury fee 

2. Write the obligatory work description (length is max. 2000 characters). Note, that you can write the description also in English.

In the work proposal, describe how your work is related to the theme of the exhibition. Also tell us how you would like the work to be hung.

3. Name all files according to the instructions on the application form, e.g. artist_surname_work_title_full size.

Notification of selections will be sent to all applicants by e-mail by 30 October 2024. So please check that the e-mail address you entered is correct. An artist contract is sent to the artists selected for the exhibition.

Submit the application in time, because the link to the application closes on September 30, 2024 at 4 p.m. If there are problems with the form or if you do not receive a confirmation email (check your spam folder as well), please contact nayttelyt@taiteilijato.fi.

The jury fee

The jury fee of 30 euros must be paid to Taiteilijat O ry’s account before the end of the application period on 30 September 2024 at 16:00 (EET). A copy of the payment receipt must be attached to the application form.

The Curator Petri Kaverma

The curator of the exhibition, visual artist Petri Kaverma, is responsible for the selection of the artworks. The curator evaluates the work proposals based on the work photos or sketches and the written artwork description you provide. Petri Kaverma makes photographs, videos and mixed media sculptures. With his works, he tries to create a dialogue between the works and different environments.

Kaverma graduated with a doctorate in visual arts in 2012. In his postdoc research in the area of ​​critical design, he has dealt with the cultural and visual aspects of death and tried to find new solutions for meeting the public. Kaverma has taught at several art schools; he has curated exhibitions and organized visual art and environmental art projects both in Finland and abroad. Petri Kaverma also curated Taiteilijat O’s first exhibition in 2006.
